The apex of each back is carved with a stylized shell motif flanked by foliate scrolls; the corners of the top rail are similarly carved in relief with foliate elements issuing from a fluted scroll; the arms are serpentine in outline and have an unusually carved scrolling element at the join to the back; similarly, the end of the arm is carved with an acanthus leaf; the chairs stand on cabriole legs, the tops of which are carved with a stylized foliate element.
